Skilled Independent 189 Visa

The sub-class 189 visa is a skilled visa, an independent visa where the candidate does not need sponsorship or a firm job offer in Australia, and if the candidate is granted the sub-class 189 visa, they can live and work anywhere in Australia as a permanent resident.

This is a points-tested visa, for skilled workers, with minimum of 60 points required to be considered

To be able to apply for this visa you need to submit an Expression of Interest (“EOI”) and if successful, then be invited to apply, through a Letter of Invitation from the Minister for Immigration You can be inside or outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted.

Invitations are based on claims that you make in your expression of interest, so your application must include evidence to support your claims. When you receive the Letter of Invitation, you must;

  • Nominate an occupation that is on the relevant Skilled Occupation List,
  • Obtain a suitable skills assessment for that occupation,
  • Be below 50 years of age,
  • Achieve the score specified in your Letter of Invitation based on the factors in the points test, and
  • Have at least competent English.
